Cancer Research UK has an impressive record in the development of novel treatments for cancer. Since the charity's Drug Development Office (DDO) was established in 1982, it has taken over 100 novel agents into Phase I/II studies of which four, including Temodal®, have so far reached the market. Of the agents that have completed Phase I through the charity, over 5% have subsequently been registered by companies as marketed products - a conversion rate that compares with the pharmaceutical industry.
The DDO has worked with many companies from small start up biotech companies to major pharmaceutical corporations. These collaborations have involved working with companies on the early development of their main product, to undertaking "academic" trials on company drugs, e.g. novel combinations and continuing to work with companies after they have licensed a new treatment from Cancer Research Technology.
